and Banana Nut Pancakes
Welcome to the eighth edition of Top of The Stack 🥞!
Every Sunday I share five indie newsletters that you probably haven’t heard of. My goal is threefold:
make it easy for you to discover awesome indie newsletters.
help authors grow their audiences.
share pancake pics.
If you discover a newsletter here, I hope you’ll subscribe and follow the author on Twitter! If you have a newsletter (or a pancake pic) to share, @me on Twitter! @samdebrule
1. The Bittman Project
Food • 4 emails/week • Tens of thousands of subscribers
Lots of food publications embrace the pleasurable and entertaining parts of food and ignore everything else; others focus on the serious issues and ignore the joy. The Bittman Project does both. It’s also essential that we continue to support work from everyone, particularly BIPOC writers, photographers, and illustrators. In doing so, we’re delivering the best of what’s out there on food and cooking — right now, straight to your inbox.

2. Burnt Toast by Virginia Sole-Smith
Food & culture • 2 emails/week • Tens of thousands of subscribers
Burnt Toast is a twice-a-week newsletter about how we navigate diet culture and fatphobia, especially through parenting. (But non-parents like it too!)
I publish one free essay here every week. They’re usually a mix of answers to the questions you submit (like why are all the Boomers on diets, or but, what about health?), short rants, and reported explorations of how we relate to food, health, and our bodies. I’m also deep into research for my next book, so sometimes you get outtakes, behind-the-scenes peeks, and the little research snippets that I can’t stop thinking about.Â

3. Oldster Magazine
Aging • 4 emails/week • Thousands of subscribers
Oldster Magazine explores what it means to travel through time in a human body—of any gender, at every phase of life. It is the brainchild of its editor-in-chief, Sari Botton. Most weeks there will be at least two posts; some weeks there will be more.

4. The Kicks You Wear
Sneakers • 2 emails/week • Thousands of subscribers
Just look down at the shoes you’re wearing right now. Or the shoes your favorite NBA player is wearing. Or the brand that sponsors your favorite college football team. Sneakers and the business they’re apart of matter and you don’t even know it.

5. Sighs & Whispers
Fashion & culture • 1 email/week • Hundreds of subscribers
Sighs & Whispers is a weekly newsletter from Laura McLaws Helms. I am a fashion/cultural historian, researcher and writer based in New York. With a particular interest in fashion, culture, women’s issues, design and magazines in the twentieth century, my work delves into all of these areas and illuminates their intersections.
